    Ant 

    Have ants in the pants: to be restless and uneasy 
    (آروم و قرار نداشتن)
    Do you have ants in your pants or what?

    Bat

    Blind as a bat: very blind 
    (خیلی کور)
    I'm blind as a bat without my glasses.

    Bee

    Have a bee in one's bonnet: to be in a bad mood 
    (روی مود وحال بد بودن)
    She has a bee in her bonnet today.

    Busy as a bee: very busy 
    (خیلی کار داشتن)
    He never seems to have time to talk. he's always busy as a bee.

    Mind your own bee's wax: do your own business 
    (سرت به کار خودت باشه)

    Bird

    A little bird told me: an unnamed person or source told me 
    (گنجشکه بهم گفت)

    Bird: woman or girl (British) 
    (زن، خانم)
    Do you know that bird?

    Bird legs: very thing legs 
    (پاهای نحیف و لاغر)
    He can't be a runner; he has bird legs.

    Birds of a feather flock together: people who are alike attract each other 
    (کبوتر با کبوتر باز با باز)

    Early bird: a person who wakes up early in the morning 
    (آدم سحر خیز)
    You're such an early bird.

    Eat like a bird: to eat a little food and have a small appetite 
    (کم غذا خوردن مثل گنجشک)
    She eats like a bird.

    To be for the birds: anything that doesn't have a good quality 
    (معادل وقتی که میگیم کلبه درویشانه یا لقمه حقیرانه یا هر چیز کم ارزش دیگری )
    This car is for the birds.

    Give someone the bird: show someone the middle finger 
    (انگشت وسط را به کسی نشان دادن برای توهین)

    Bug

    As snug as a bug in a rug: extremely comfortable 
    ( جای خیلی راحت داشتن)

    Bug: virus 
    (ویروس، بیماری)
    My sister can't come to the party cause she caught a bug.

    Bug somebody: annoy and bother somebody 
    (کسی را اذیت کردن)
    Stop bugging me!

    Work out all the bugs: to remedy and solve all the problems 
    (حل کردن همه مشکلات)
    My project is almost ready, I just need to work out all the bugs.

    Buffalo

    Buffalo: to trick somebody 
    (گول زدن کسی)
    He buffaloed me.

    Bull

    Bull shit: nonsense 
    (مزخرف)
    That's a bunch of bull shit.

    Bull-headed: stubborn 
    (کله شق)
    Sometimes you are so bull-headed.

    Cock-and-bull story: funny and unbelievable story 
    (داستان و حرف های باور نکردنی)
    Every time I go to his house his father tells me cock-and-bull story.

    Take the bull by the horns: to bravely deal with a difficult or dangerous problem
    (کار سخت و شق القمر کردن)
    You have got to just take the bull by the horns and do it yourself.

    Be like a bull in a china shop
    (آدم دست و پا چلفتی، کسی که حرف ها و کارهاش باعث ناراحت شدن بقیه می شه)
    1. behave in a way that's not sensitive to other people's feeling or in a way that shows you don't understand the rules 
    2. keep dropping or breaking things


    Butterfly

    Have butterflies: to be nervous 
    (استرس داشتن و عصبی بودن)
    I always get butterflies when I speak in front of a group.

    Camel

    Straw that broke the camel's back: the final act that one can tolerate
    (تر خلاص، کاری که دیگه حوصله آدما سر ببره)
    She borrowed my dress again without asking?! that's straw that broke the camel's back.

    Cat

    Cat call: a whistle for a pretty woman or girl to show excitement about her beauty 
    (سوت دختر بازی)
    You should hear the cat calls she gets whenever she walks down the street.

    Catnap: a short nap 
    (خواب کوتاه، قیلوله، چرت)
    I'll meet you at the movies right after I take a little catnap.

    Copycat: one who copies another person's action 
    (آدمی که خلاقیت نداره و همش کاره دیگران را کپی می کنه)
    Every time I buy something, she buys the same thing. she's such a copycat!

    Curiosity killed the cat: curiosity is dangerous 
    (فضول را بردن جهنم...)

    Pussy cat
    (عزیزم، جیگرم)
    1. honey, sweetheart, darling  
    2. a gentle person
    He's such a pussy cat!

    Rain cats and dogs: rain heavily 
    (بارون اومدن مثل دم اسب)
    It's raining cats and dogs outside.

    Be a scaredy cat: be coward and frightened 
    (ترسو و بزدل بودن)
    Don't be a scaredy cat.

    Something the cat dragged in: said about a person who just enters the room (معادل وقتی که می گیم فلانی حلال زادس)
    Look what the cat dragged in. 

    The cat's got your tongue: are you speechless? (because of being shocked or surprised) 
    (موش زبونتا خورده)

    Chicken

    Chicken out: to be afraid and lose courage 
    (جا زدن و ترسیدن)
    He chickened out at the last minute.

    Chicken shit: 1.coward and afraid 2. very small and petty 
    (ترسو و بزدل، کم و ناچیز)
    She's such a chicken shit!
    My boss pays me chicken shit salary.

    Not to count one's chicken before they're hatched: not to count on something before it's a reality 
    (معادل جوجه را آخر پاییز میشمارن)
    Don't go counting your chicken before they're hatched.

    Hen-pecked: a man who is completely dominated by his wife 
    (مرد زن زلیل)
    He has been hen-pecked for the past 25 years.

    Run around like a chicken with its head cut off: a person who runs around aimlessly and gets little or nothing accomplished 
    (مثل مرغ پر کنده پرپر زدن)
    At work he always runs around like a chicken with its head cut off.

    Spring chicken: young and inexperienced 
    (آدم خام و بی تجربه)
    He's no spring chicken. (he's not a spring chicken.)

اصطلاحات انگلیسی مربوط به رنگ ها

    زبان انگلیسی پر است از اصطلاحات و ضرب المثل هایی که در زبان محاوره بسیار از آنها استفاده می شود. در انگلیسی اصطلاحات بسیاری وجود دارند که در آنها از رنگ ها استفاده شده است. در زیر اصطلاحات انگلیسی مربوط به رنگ ها با معنی فارسی و انگلیسی و همچنین مثال برای هر کدام آورده شده است.


    BLACK IDIOMS
    balck line

    black sheep: A person in a family or a community who is different from others, in a bad way
    (کسی که با بقیه گروه یا خانواده فرق می کنه و مایه آبرو ریزیه)
    My brother Ted didn't go to school; he is the black sheep in our family.

    black and white: something that is written on paper 
    (نوشته و متن روی کاغذ، اشاره به رنگ کاغذ و رنگ نوشته ها دارد)
    He told his secretary to prepare the agreement in black and white.

    black and blue: bruised and beaten 
    (سیاه و کبود بخاطر ضربه دیدن)
    Poor Jim was black and blue after he fell off the apple tree. 

    black as coal: very black 
    (سیاه مثل زغال)
    My friend's cat is as black as coal.
     
    black out: To lose consciousness; faint 
    (ضعف کردن)
    It was a hard and tiring day, and she suddenly blacked out.

    black eye: A bruise on someone’s eye 
    (چشم کبود و ضربه دیده)
    Dad came home with a black eye today, but he didn't tell us what happened.

    in the black: successful and profitable, making money 
    (سودآور و به اصطلاح وقتی کسی نونش تو روغن باشه)
    The big store was running in the black, it had so many customers 
     Antonym: In the red 

    black market: places where people buy and sell goods illegally 
    (بازار سیاه)
    Jerry sells cigarettes from South America on the black market.

    pot call the kettle black: A person who criticizes someone else, while he is as guilty as that person 
    (دیگ به دیگ میگه روت سیاه)
    Bill said: "John cheated at the exam." but John replied: "The pot is calling the kettle black."



    BLUE IDIOMS
    blue line

    blue Monday: A Monday when you have to work after a happy weekend. 
    (روز کاری بعد از یک روز تعطیل، در ایران این روز شنبه است)
    People usually wish they could sleep through blue Monday.

    blue collar worker: A manual laborer, workers who work manually rather than sitting in the office 
    (طبقه کارگر که کار فیزیکی انجام می دهند)
    Jack's father is a blue collar worker; he works as a mechanic in a company.
    Antonym: White collar worker

    out of the blue: by surprise; unexpectedly 
    (غیرمنتظره و بدون اطلاع قبلی)
    At the last minute Johnny came out of the blue and caught the ball and scored the winning goal.

    once in a blue moon: Very rarely; almost never 
    (به ندرت و خیلی کم، خیلی کم پیش می آید که رنگ ماه آبی باشد)
    We only go out for Italian food once in a blue moon although we enjoy it very much.

    feel blue: feel depressed 
    (احساس افسردگی داشتن)
    “What’s that the matter with you today?"   
    "Nothing I'm just feeling a little blue."

    blue-eyed boy:  A boy or young man who is always noticed a lot by someone in a high position 
    (شخصی که همیشه مورد توجه معلم یا ریئس قرار می گیره)
    He is such a blue-eyed boy! I don’t like that the manager always treats him as if he is special.



    GREEN IDIOMS
    green line

    green thumb/green finger: A talent for gardening; ability to make things grow 
    (کسی که استعداد خوبی در باغبانی و کاشتن داره)
    Mr. Wilson's neighbors say his flowers grow because he has a green thumb.

    green with envy: Very jealous; full of envy 
    (احساس حسادت کردن)
    Alice's friends were green with envy when they saw her new dress. 

    grass is always greener on the other side: a place that is far away, and better than, where you are now, or another person’s situation that is very different from your situation 
    (مرغ همسایه غازه)
    He realized that the grass is always greener on the other side when he saw that his new job wasn’t perfect, and had its own problems too.

    give someone the green light/get the green light: give/have permission to do something 
    (چراغ سبز به کسی نشون دادن)
    They gave us the green light to advertise on their webpage.

     


    RED IDIOMSred line

    red herring: An unimportant matter that draws attention away from the main subject 
    (نکته انحرافی)
    The first part of the question was a red herring to draw our attention away from the answer.

    beet red: when somebody's face is red because of shyness 
    (از خجالت مثل لبو شدن)
    I could see my son up on the stage, his little face was beet red!

    catch someone red-handed: To catch someone when he/she is doing something wrong (مچ کسی را گرفتن، در حال ارتکاب جرم)
    He kept lying to me about where he was going in the evenings, so yesterday I followed him and caught him red-handed. He was with another woman!

    in the red: To be in debt to your bank, or owe an institution some money 
    (وضعیت نامساعد مالی، وقتی که بدهی زیاد داشته باشیم)
    I’ve got three credit card bills to pay off at the moment. I hate being in the red!

    paint the town red: To go out and have a really good time at a party 
    (حسابی خوشگذرونی کردن)
    When my friends came to see me after so many years, we went out and painted the town red. 

    red tape: bureaucratic delay, a lot of formalities 
    (کاغذ بازی های اداری، فرمالیته)
    I just want to start my own business, but the because of a lot of red tape I want to give up.

    red-letter-day: A day that is memorable because of some important event 
    (روز تعطیل، روز بیاد ماندنی)
    The day I graduated was a red-letter day for my mum, she still talks about it today.

    roll out the red carpetTo greet a person with great respect and warm welcome 
    (از کسی استقبال گرم و با شکوه کردن)
    When Barack Obama came to visit our school, we rolled out the red carpet for him.

    see red: To react angrily against someone or something 
    (عصبانی شدن)
    John saw red when he heard someone shouting at his mother.



    WHITE IDIOMS

    white collars: A term used for office workers that traditionally wear white shirts with a collar 
    (طبقه کارمندی که کار فیزیکی انجام نمی دهند)
    We have a lot of white-collar workers at the moment in the company; We are in need for more blue collars.

    white as a sheet: When someone is afraid a lot he/she is as white as a sheet 
    (سفید و رنگ پریده بخاطر ترس یا بیماری)
    Harold are you alright? You’re as white as a sheet, what’s the matter?

    white elephant: something that is of no use; useless possessions 
    (چیزی که سودی نداشته باشد و نگه داری از آن خرج هم داشته باشد)
    My mum bought a new CD player for me, but it’s a white elephant. I don’t need it, I don’t even have any CDs!

    white lie: A ‘little’ or ‘harmless’ lie told with good intentions 
    (دروغ مصلحتی)
    I just wanted to get out of work so I told my boss a little white lie, and said I had a doctor’s appointment.

    white wash: To cover up faults or wrongdoings 
    (ماست مالی کردن)
    Kate wanted to whitewash her faults but the teacher understood it.




    YELLOW IDIOMS
    yellow line

    yellow bellied: Someone who is coward or extremely timid 
    (ترسو و بزدل)
    He is a yellow-bellied coward, and doesn't stand up for what he thinks is right!
